Meet Kim
Kim Acord is a remarkable individual who has dedicated her life to helping others who are struggling with addiction. As a recovery mentor at Quest and now manager, she brings her own experience of overcoming addiction and the challenges that came along with it to help others in their journey to recovery.
Recently, while Quest was in the midst of planning our partner benefit event at Hollywood Theater, it became clear during a conversation with Kim that community partnerships can affect us in ways that others may never realize. Kim's own connection to Hollywood Theater began during her recovery treatment in 2014 when she volunteered at the theater as part of her volunteer service in her program. This was a challenging time for Kim, as her daughters were apart from her care while she underwent treatment for two years. However, volunteering at Hollywood Theater helped build a solid web of providing purpose and a community that supported her during a difficult time.
One evening after her shift, an employee offered Kim to choose a poster out of a bin of rolled-up movie posters as a token of appreciation for all her work. Without thinking too much, Kim explains how she grabbed a random poster from the full bucket. When she unrolled it, she was struck by an inner arrow of feeling at her core. She explains how "the poster was pink and black with a punkish silhouette that said 'Three Girls Vs the World.' " This poster was more than just a simple gift to Kim; for her, it was a connective sign, a gesture from the outer world that her three daughters were there with her in her battle, and that she would find her way to the other side of reunion and recovery.
Kim's experience at Hollywood Theater is a testament to the power of connection, support, and community in getting through darkness. Hollywood Theater provided Kim with a welcoming space to volunteer, surrounded by people and a mission that felt in alignment with her own. It was a place where she could heal at a pace that allowed simple but kind gestures to seed hope, even during the darkest moments of recovery. Kim's story, her greater journey, and her work at Quest remind us that there are others who are out there, eager to lend a hand, and that unexpected gifts are found when we are connected. Thank you, Kim, and thank you, Hollywood Theater, for your valuable work.
