Quest opens new Transitional Housing for LGBTQIA2S+ and Non-Binary Individuals

Quest Center for Integrative Health and Bridges to Change acknowledge the ongoing and profound housing needs of Transgender and Non-Binary (TNB) individuals while seeking behavioral health services. In the fall of 2019, Quest and Bridges partnered to open the first LGBTQ+ recovery home in Oregon. Today, more than half of the residents living in the house who completed addictions treatment have gone on to live in permanent housing.

On April 1, Quest and Bridges will open a second recovery home that will immediately create additional capacity to provide eight more beds for our clients in need of sober transitional housing.

TNB adults experience significantly elevated rates of substance use, relative to their cisgender peers, and more so during the COVID public health emergency. These findings underscore the need for culturally tailored clinical interventions to treat substance use disorder in transgender populations.

People who identify as transgender or gender nonconforming also report higher rates of housing instability and homelessness, which exacerbate health conditions, jeopardize a person’s physical safety, and increase a person’s risk of interacting with law enforcement. Oregon is confronting a broad need for access to culturally appropriate alcohol and drug free housing, especially for LGBTQIA+ 2S, HIV+ and Non-Binary Individuals

In 2019, the Quest Center Recovery Home began services for individuals receiving substance use disorder treatment in our addictions program, Finding and Sustaining Recovery – FSR. Quest housing improves health outcomes by reducing risk factors that lead to homelessness for historically marginalized communities. Early recovery can be painful and isolating, often necessitating a departure from known places and people. This can help individuals break the cycle of addiction in their lives.

Quest Center provides high-quality evidence-based treatment including mental health, acupuncture, exercise, nutrition, and case management, we empower individuals to become self-sufficient. By providing safe and sober housing, our community members can achieve healthy sober lives. Quest seeks to open a door to our most vulnerable clients as they transition into recovery.

This project is also made possible with funding from Oregon Health Authority ARP.
